Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers in men; it accounts for approximately 15% of all cancers diagnosed in men. According to a 2015 estimate, in Italy there are 35,000 new cases a year, but risk of death is not very high, especially with early intervention.
Data on survivors 5 years after diagnosis (91% on average) shows that prostate cancer has one of the highest survival rates, especially if the patients’ old age is taken into account and data is adjusted for other possible causes of death.
One of the main risk factors is age: chances to be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 40 are very low, whereas they dramatically increase after 50. Approximately 2 out of 3 prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over 65. Researchers have proved that approximately 70% of men over 80 have prostate cancer, although in most cases this condition is asymptomatic and is detected only after death during the autopsy.
